When it comes to non-verbal communication, the thumbs up is one of the most underrated. It’s simple. It’s effective. It’s versatile.

The liberal use of the thumbs up is one of my favorite things about the people here.

• See someone you know on the street? Thumbs up.
• Tudo bem? (Everything good?) Thumbs up.
• You stop the car to allow a woman who’s carrying a basket on her head, a baby on her back and a jug of water in her hand? Thumbs up.¹

To be in a place that can at times feel so negative, so harsh, it’s refreshing to see people use the positive and happy gesture so much.
